I've never had formal training in design. But, from as early on as I can remember, I've been enamored with interior spaces and the feeling of warmth and comfort they have the potential to evoke.
The first home I fell madly in love with belonged to my childhood friend, Lindsay. She lived in a clapboard house in the woods with many acres out back for her pet goat, Buttercup, to romp and for her three dogs and two cats to play. Her mother, Pat, was an artist who filled their home with watercolor paintings of animals and landscapes. The living room was filled with over stuffed sofas and chairs where Lindsay and I would sink in and spend the hours reading our Teen Magazines. The dining room was painted dark red and had creamy white curtains that puddled onto the floor. It's simple wooden chairs with needlepoint seats and expansive oak table would be considered the epitome of farmhouse modern design today.
But, my favorite place was Lindsay's room. Her father built a full sized bed into the large front window eave and her mother hand painted its frame with delicate yellow and pink flowers and green vines. Lindsay's grandmother added a handmade quilt to the foot of the bed where the cats would curl up. We spent hours talking about boys and clothes, places we hoped to visit and the people we dreamt we might someday become. I still remember the laughter, the hours of trying out pots of lip gloss and pouting into Lindsay's antique gilded mirror, the smell of wood burning in the fireplace downstairs on cold autumn mornings and the delicious scent of fried eggs, bacon, oatmeal and cider that waitied for us on the large steel range in hammered copper pots and pans.
I learned early on that really great design was not about perfectly placed items or specifically stylized rooms, but rather the joy and serenity that one experiences due to a unique combination of pieces and art, some classic and high design, others passed down from loved ones or collected along the way from travels to memorable places near and far.
For me, design inspiration literally comes from everywhere: nature, the seasons, art, clothing, films, music, hotels and people. This site is my attempt to collect what influences me and to translate it into looks I love. I hope you find something that stimulates your senses here as well while you join me on a journey through fabulous design and learn about the people who create and curate the looks that make a house a home.
